The BBC has announced its shortlist for the prestigious Sports Personality of the Year prize, with Andy Murray widely expected to claim the award next month.

Murray, who won the award in 2013 and 2015, joins fellow nominees Jamie Vardy, Nick Skelton, Gareth Bale, Sophie Christiansen, Kate Richardson-Walsh, Danny Willett, Nicola Adams, Max Whitlock, Adam Peaty, Alistair Brownlee, Mo Farah, Dame Sarah Storey, Kadeena Cox, Jason Kenny and Laura Kenny on this year's shortlist.

It has been a year of remarkable success for British sport, with Team GB becoming the first nation to better its Olympic medal haul after hosting the previous games, but Murray seemingly stands alone as the outstanding sportsman of the year.

All leading bookmakers have Wimbledon champion and world No.1 Murray as odds-on favourite for the crown after a remarkable 2016, with triathlete Alistair Brownlee the second favourite but some distance behind.

It has been a remarkable year for Murray, who won his second Wimbledon title in dominant fashion and spent the second half of 2016 overhauling Novak Djokovic at the top of the world rankings, winning Olympic gold in the process.

Murray won 78 of his 87 matches this season and capped the year by overcoming Djokovic at the ATP World Tour Finals in London.
