Rafael Nadal refused to blame long-standing knee problems after his shock first-round exit at Wimbledon.

Nadal lost in straight sets to Belgian world No135 Steve Darcis on Court One.

When asked with his knees played a part in the defeat, the 27-year-old said: “I don't want to talk about my knee. Steve Darcis played a fantastic match. He deserved it. If I talk about my knee, it's an excuse.

“My opponent played well. I had my chances but I didn't make it. On grass is difficult to adapt yourself, to adapt your game. I didn't find my rhythm.

"I am confident that I will have a recover well and be ready for the next tournaments.”
