Wimbledon 2016: Novak Djokovic will keep putting foot down after reaching 30

It is a measure of how dominant Novak Djokovic has become that he is no longer chasing records but setting his own.

The defending champion’s 6-4, 6‑3, 7-6 win over Adrian Mannarino was his 30th consecutive Grand Slam victory as he overtook the record held by Rob Laver.

Djokovic can now set a mark that may never be beaten and said: “The record that I managed to break is one of the better ones because obviously as a professional tennis player, you always aim to play your best in Grand Slams.

“You want to be consistent and win as many matches in these tournaments that matter the most in our sport. Knowing that I won 30 in a row is very pleasing obviously. I want to keep on going. Let’s see where it takes me.

“I have to be very grateful to have the opportunity to make history in the sport. Of course, every single record that I manage to achieve in last couple of years is important and is unique to me.”

Djokovic (above) will play either Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci or the big-serving Sam Querrey, a former Queen’s champion, in the third round and is happy with the form he has brought onto grass as he strives to move a step closer to a clean sweep of Grand Slams in 2016. He holds all of the four titles and would like to also collect the Olympic gold in Rio but is monitoring advice about the Zika virus.

At present, Djokovic aims to compete in the Games but admitted: “I have been trying to reach out to as many Brazilian friends and acquaintances that I have, to get as much information. When I do get more information about it, I will be able to make my final decision. But for now, I am planning to go.”
