The 'good Gaston' prevails

14 April 2012

Gaston Gaudio had to ward off a match point before beating Czech opponent Jan Hernych 6-7, 7-5, 6-0 in the first round of the Estoril Open.

Hernych was 5-4 ahead in the second set but No2 seed Gaudio fought back by taking 10 consecutive games. He won the last set in only 16 minutes.

"There were two Gastons out there, a bad one and a good one," said the Argentinian, who will next meet Michal Tabara.

Reigning champion Juan Ignacio Chela will begin his challenge today, along with former Roland Garros champions Juan-Carlos Ferrero, Carlos Moya and Albert Costa.
