Toda has Steve to call on

Tottenham's new signing Kazuyuki Toda says he knew all about the club before signing for them from former captain Steve Perryman.

Perryman was the player's coach at Shimizu S-Pulse for five years, and told him all about the set-up at Spurs.

Toda, as exclusively revealed by Standard Sport on Friday, has joined on a one-year loan from the Japanese club and has already got a work permit.

He said: "Perryman told me about the history and tradition of Tottenham and told me it will be fantastic, but also I know it will be a big challenge."

However, Sunderland boss Howard Wilkinson was left fuming after Toda turned his back on The Black Cats, saying: "We've put him up in a hotel and trained him for a week - then get a call on Friday saying he won't be in."
