Vieira and Wiltord in five-star hit

13 April 2012

Arsenal pair Patrick Vieira and Sylvain Wiltord were among the goalscorers as world champions France beat South Korea 5-0 in the opening match of the Confederations Cup today.

It was Vieira's first goal for his country on his 40th appearance.

The Arsenal midfielder lashed home a 25-metre volley in the 19th minute that swerved away from goalkeeper Woon Jae Lee into the roof of the net.

Lyon's Steve Marlet, making his first start for France after a brief substitute appearance against Turkey last November, scored twice.

The rout was completed with late goals from substitutes Youri Djorkaeff and Wiltord. It would have been an even bigger win, but for a penalty miss by Christophe Dugarry in the first half.

France were missing several key players including Zinedine Zidane, Emmanuel Petit and David Trezeguet.

They have now comfortably beaten both co-hosts for the World Cup Finals, following their 5-0 win over Japan in Paris in March.
