Voller - We deserved our win

Germany coach Rudi Voller believed his team deserved their 1-0 second-round victory over Paraguay despite leaving it late to snatch the winner.

Oliver Neuville was the German hero with the only goal two minutes from the end in Seogwipo.

Voller said: "I feel it was a deserved victory in the end. Paraguay are a very difficult and strong opponent, but when we were able to play the ball more down the wings later on we got a merited victory."

He added: "The first half was not really good football. The ball was just being hit all over the place, it was not really a proper game.

"We made a change at half-time (Sebastian Kehl for Marko Rehmer) and we started to press Paraguay more after that."

Germany, the first team to book their place in the quarter-finals, will now play the winner of the United States or Mexico.

"It does not matter which one as both are good sides who had good first rounds," said Voller.

Meanwhile Paraguay coach Cesare Maldini revealed he will return to a role at AC Milan after now finishing his brief tenure with the South Americans.

The former Italian boss only took over in Paraguay at the turn of the year, replacing Sergio Markarian.

"It has been a great job, they are a very professional side and I am very happy to take them to this point," said Maldini, who was in charge of Italy at France 98.

"I will go back to Milan because I have an observers job there. We have a group of people who go around watching the different games and I am one of them, so that will be my job in the future."

Maldini, though, was pleased with his team's performance in his final game in charge.

"It was a very equal game until the end," said the 70-year-old. "There weren't very many scoring opportunities from either side.

"Most parts of the game were in midfield but then there was a great run down the right and then a beautiful goal from the Germany number seven."
