Wakefield would be prepared to allow goalkicking scrum-half Danny Brough to join Super League rivals Huddersfield but only if they can agree suitable compensation.

The Wildcats are desperate to keep hold of their prolific scorer and inspirational playmaker but the former Scotland captain is out of contract at the end of the season and has rejected the offer of a new deal.

On Monday, Wakefield executive director Diane Maskill admitted the club are in talks with Huddersfield over a potential move, with the Giants likely to offer players as well as cash in exchange to get hold of their long-term target immediately.

"We have been discussing the possibility of a new contract with Danny Brough and his agent since summer 2009, and during that time we made several offers, none of which proved satisfactory," said Maskill.

"While we were anxious to keep a quality player like Danny at Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, we have reached a point in the negotiations where we were no longer prepared to increase our final offer.

"Huddersfield Giants have approached us concerning Danny and we are considering what they have said to us.

"Any deal would have to be in the best interests of Wakefield Trinity Wildcats and enable us to maintain or improve the quality of the team's competitiveness and potential."

Huddersfield climbed to third place in Engage Super League following Sunday's 26-20 win over champions Leeds but see Brough as a key to improving their attacking play.

Giants coach Nathan Brown would move regular scrum-half Luke Robinson to hooker to accommodate the former Hull half-back, who has arguably the best kicking game in Super League.

Meanwhile, Wakefield remain confident of signing Hull KR stand-off Paul Cooke on loan to the end of the season, although the two deals are unconnected.
