Wenger: I won't buy new keeper

Arsene Wenger today ruled out buying a new goalkeeper in the January transfer window.

The Arsenal manager says he is happy with Jens Lehmann and Manuel Almunia and will not even enforce his right to recall Stuart Taylor from Leicester.

Wenger's vote of confidence for his goalkeepers comes as he prepares to recall Lehmann for Sunday's Premiership showdown with Chelsea at Highbury.

"I don't feel it will be necessary to bring in a new goalkeeper in January," he said. "Not at all."

Wenger is under pressure to find a solution to Arsenal's goalkeeping problems after dropping Lehmann only for his replacement, Almunia, to make key errors in each of the three games he has played.

Almunia was at fault for the goals against Manchester United in the Carling Cup defeat and Rosenborg in the Champions League. And he almost allowed a tame shot from Birmingham's Clinton Morrison to beat him in last Saturday's Premiership victory.

Wenger, who must decide whether to bring back Lehmann on Sunday, insists he never had any intention of bringing in a new goalkeeper. He has been linked in the past with Mark Schwarzer of Middlesbrough, Edwin van der Sar of Fulham and Sebastian Frey of Parma.

England Under-21 international Taylor is on notice of a recall at 24 hours notice but Wenger has no plans to use that facility either.

That news will boost both Lehmann and Almunia. Lehmann was axed by Wenger after the 2-1 defeat at Liverpool because he felt the German was not sharp enough.
